"Godspell” Heats Up At Heartwood

Temperatures may be plummeting outdoors, but things are just heating up in the Poe Theater, as Heartwood and Lincoln Academy’s collaborative youth production of the Broadway musical, Godspell, races toward opening night, Oct 19th. The well known and loved tunes and parables based on the Gospel According to St. Matthew have once again found their voice in a young and enthusiastic cast, under the direction of Griff Braley and Beth Preston. A rock band led by none other than Sean Fleming has inspired this cast and will leave your toes tapping, if not outright dancing. And not to disappoint … there will be tech to enchant, under the direction of Letitia Munson.

As NY critic Roma Torre writes of the 2011 Broadway Revival, “Godspell turns out to be a 40-year-old relic that's surprisingly irresistible.” Begun as a college project, the musical conceived and originally directed by John-Michael Tebelak, with music and new lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, moved to an off-Broadway debut in 1970 and has since been a favorite in professional revivals, colleges, and high schools.

Generous funding for Godspell is provided by Chesterfield Associates of Westport Island, Heartwood’s Season Sponsor - Bath Savings Institution, Season Youth Sponsor - Damariscotta Hardware, and anonymous foundations.
