Youth Auditions for Heartwood & LA’s “Fiddler on the Roof”

Heartwood Regional Theater Company and Lincoln Academy announce auditions for their annual youth musical collaborative. Fiddler on the Roof, a 1964 Broadway classic, was the first musical theater production to run more than 3,000 performances, and has been revived many times on Broadway. This winner of nine Tony awards, based on the stories of Sholem Aleichem, was created by Jerry Bock, Sheldon Harnick and Joseph Stein.

Auditions, for ANY students within driving distance from Lincoln Academy, entering grades 7 – 12 will be held at Parker B. Poe Theater at Lincoln Academy on June 10 between 3 and 6 pm. Students should enter on the band room level to fill out paperwork and will be called in to audition.

The production, scheduled for Fall, 2013, will be directed by Griff Braley, musical direction by Sean Fleming and vocal coaching by Beth Preston. Tish Munson will train and lead a student technical staff, and a choreographer will be announced at a later date.

A large number of ensemble members are required for the production’s major numbers, and many key roles are available. Not all roles require singing; non-singing auditions are permitted. All ensemble members will be involved in major choreography. Students who are unable to make this audition time should contact either Beth Preston or Griff Braley no later than the day of the auditions (contact info below).

Principal roles include: Tevye, a poor milkman; Golde, Tevye's wife, and their daughters Tzeitel, Hodel, Chava, Shprintze, and Bielke. The men who fall in love with the daughters are Motel Kamzoil, Perchik and Fyedka. Other roles include Lazar Wolf, the butcher that Tzeitel was supposed to marry, Yente, the gossipy village matchmaker who matches Tzeitel and Lazar, Fruma-Sarah, Lazar Wolf's dead wife, who rises from the grave in Tevye's nightmare, Grandma Tzeitel, Golde's dead grandmother, Mordcha, the innkeeper, Rabbi, the village rabbi and Constable, the head of the Russian authority in Anatevka.

To audition with music, students should listen to the five songs selections below and choose the one most appropriate for his/her voice. Learn the song with the karaoke versions on youtube, memorize it and sing with karaoke at the audition. Please be prepared to ACT the song. Auditions should be 2 – 3 minutes and include an introduction.

Audition Musical Selections: If I Were a Rich Man, Tevye or Lazar Wolf ; Miracle of Miracles, Motel; Now I Have Everything, Perchik; Far From the Home I Love, Hodel; Matchmaker, Tzeitel, Hodel, Chava; Tevye’s Dream, Yente, Golda, Fruma Sarah or Grandma Tzeitel. Students who do not wish to sing in the production can bring a short monologue from the show.
