The Chalk Garden, by Enid Bagnold, premiered in 1955 in the United States and a year later, in Britain.
Mrs. St. Maugham is an elderly, imperious head of a Sussex manor. Granddaughter Laurel, a disturbed child, is under Maugham's care, until she hires the mysterious Miss Madrigal as governess.
Each of the six characters in The Chalk Garden carry a secret burden from their past, each of which is revealed, by the end of the play. Themes of SELF-SACRIFICE, REDEMPTION, and LOVE abound in this unique theater piece that weaves comic and dramatic moments.
Rex Reed's review observes, "This endearing play never seems to age, perhaps because its characters are written with such wit and brittle cleverness... It is a fragile, gossamer-winged play..."
Most recently revived in 2008 in the West End, The Chalk Garden offers an evening of poignant theater.
