Heartwood Announces 12th Season

Heartwood Theater, just underway in its 12th season, announces a schedule of diverse and dynamic productions, from classics to musicals, both student and adult.   It takes a community to provide live performance and education; Heartwood is grateful to their continuing season sponsor, Bath Savings Institution, and to more than a hundred Midcoast business advertisers and sponsors, as well as very generous foundations and individual supporters.

“Jekyll & Hyde, the Musical,” opens October 30th as the annual youth collaboration between Heartwood and Lincoln Academy.  A cast and crew of 36 Midcoast students, grades 7-12, will deliver this Broadway musical - an epic struggle between good and evil, based on the novel by Robert Louis Stevenson.

The new year kicks off with more youth programming in January, with the 2nd annual Heartwood / AOS93 collaboration.  Thirty or more middle school students, grades 3-8, will participate in a full-on production of “The Neverending Story,” based on the German novel by Michael Ende (probably best known to most, from the 1984 West German epic fantasy film).  Auditions are scheduled for early December, open to ALL Midcoast Area 3rd-8th students. (Visit www.heartwoodtheater.org or email info@heartwoodtheater.org for audition details.)

“Les Miserables” storms the stage in late April, with a cast of local and hired in performers and musicians.  (Octoboer auditions open to all Midcoast actors - visit heartwoodtheater.org for full info.)  Director Griff Braley notes, “It’s the show Heartwood began with in Wiscasset 12 years ago, with a cast of 70 students from 12 different schools.  I’ve been waiting for the right time to produce it once more, this time with adults as well as students, and come full circle.”

“Cyrano de Bergerac” is summertime fare, an epic classic (with an epic nose).  Complete with swordplay (choreographed and work-shopped by fight instructor and stunt man, Mark Bedell), this show revels in themes of integrity, bravery, glory … and the pursuit of love.  Open auditions will be held in November – visit www.heartwoodtheater.org for full details.

Summer Camps will complete the annual cycle for youth education and performance opportunities, with programming for students grades 1-12. Watch the website in late winter, for dates and descriptions.

Back by popular demand next spring - Heartwood’s Vacation Property Raffle, with more enticing locations from Washington, D.C. to Transylvania.   Each winner will receive one week’s stay in their chosen location, along with $1,000 travel money.  Watch for details to roll out!
